About John

Music Writing/Performing

Here is detail about my music writing.  Click here for detail about my music performing.

I started writing music when I was in the Navy.  I joined during the last year of the Vietnam war and served on a destroyer in the Pacific.  My first music was written while at sea.

Over the years I've continued writing music, mostly faith or family focused.  I also experimented with ways to make recordings of my songs, including background tracks and harmonies, on my own.  The songs you will hear on this site were produced in my home office - I did the background tracks, vocals and mixing myself except where noted.  Most of these are done with just a Q-Chord (sometimes referred to as a digital guitar) and my voice.  I have also added acoustic guitar and occasionally electric guitar.  The other equipment is a laptop, multi-track studio software and a small sound board for mixing, and a professional microphone.

As I'm learning how to do this, and hopefully improving each time, these productions will get better and better.  I should also note that I have permanent damage to my ears from when I served in the military (I have almost no hearing above about 3khz), including a permanent ringing in both ears.  As a result I can't really tell how clean the recordings are, and would love to hear from folks who listen to them.  I'm currently trying to carve out time to self-produce more of the songs I've written and make them as professional as I can.  As I complete them they will be posted here.

Below is a list of my songs (the list will get longer as I finish more of them), along with some background regarding how I came to write each one.  Clicking on a song opens a page containing the words to that song and a 'Play' button to listen to it.

NOTE:  I haven't been able to figure out how to get these to play in the Microsoft Edge browser yet.  They have been tested in IE, Chrome and Opera.  If you use Edge, there is a menu at the upper right that allows you to open your current link in IE.

Fifty Years of Love     When my parents were coming up on their 50th wedding anniversary, my 4 brothers and I wanted to record something for them.  I couldn't find a 50th anniversary song anywhere, so I wrote one myself.  My brother Ron then arranged it for our 5 voices, I recorded the background tracks in my home office, and we made the final recording in one of the local churches.  The rendition I posted here is this song as we recorded it.

By His Hands   I once belonged to a worship team named "By His Hands".  At one point I thought it would be cool if there was a song by that name that could maybe be our signature song.  When I couldn't find one I decided to write one myself.

Mother's Day   I had rented a wood chipper one summer a few years ago on Mother's Day weekend and was returning it with a borrowed truck.  While driving the truck, this song started playing in my head.  When I got home I sat down quick with my guitar, wrote down what I was hearing, and chorded it so I wouldn't forget the music.  The song I've posted here is the result of that.  This was the fastest I had ever written a song - it was completed in about two hours.

Christmas Song   There are some beautiful Christmas songs out there.  One winter I was listening to some Christmas music and wishing that I could write songs like that myself.  So I gave it a shot.  Posted here is my first Christmas song.

Slow Dance   One day I got an e-mail, supposedly on behalf of a young girl dying of cancer.  There was a poem in it, and I thought the words were beautiful.  Thinking how nice it would be to give something back to her, I put it to music.  I recorded it to a CD and sent it to the only contact name in the e-mail - but it came back 'Return to sender'.  Guess I'll never know who wrote the words.
